Delhi govt to install over 5,000 kerbside EV chargers on all major roads – Times of India

The Delhi government is working to set up over 5,000 kerbside EV charging points on all major roads in the coming 3 years, according to the officials. On Monday, Jasmine Shah, Vice Chairperson of the Dialogue and Development Commission of India (DDCD) convened a meeting on the installation of kerbside EV charging points in Delhi.
The government officials state that kerbside charging is an emerging concept globally in which electric vehicles can be charged while being parked on roadside kerbs with charging stations or either using streetlight lamp posts.
The Delhi government had already launched the 3-year action plan for charging and swapping infrastructure, deploying around 18,000 EV charging points in August 2022.
In the meeting, the officials said, a key strategy to achieve this target is to implement kerb-side charging points while leveraging the existing electrical infrastructure in Delhi for the installation of EV charging stations.
Moreover, within the meeting, it was decided that kerb-side charging will leverage substation space or lamp posts that are near on-street parking sites.
The installation process will primarily begin with a pilot for 100 kerbside chargers spread equitably across all 3 discoms. Designed under the guidance of discoms and DDC, the pilot will take the lead in EV chargers installation on PWD roads, said the officials.
After setting up 100 kerbside chargers, the installation will be scaled across all major roads in Delhi, states the officials. Furthermore, they added Kerbside charging will offer convenient options for two-wheelers and three-wheelers. Additionally, it will also play a major role for residential colonies that lack designated parking.
According to the officials, the discoms will identify the road stretches where this pilot can start with deployment of 100 EV chargers. Delhi Transco Limited (DTL) will be the state nodal agency of operationalising the complete pilot along with the state EV cell of the Transport department.
“Delhi will take the lead in setting up kerbside charging facilities for EVs on all major roads. Kerbside charging is another innovative concept that Delhi is bringing to provide 24×7 access of EV charging to 2W and 3W which have remained the priority segments for us,” said Jasmine Shah.
