EPF Contribution: How to check your employer EPF contribution status?

Every month if the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) contribution is deducted from your salary, then it is mandatory for the employer to deposit both his and your portions of the contribution to your EPF account. However, there have been instances in the past where employers have deducted the amount from the salary but have not deposited the provident fund contribution to the employee’s EPF account.

are furious over the airline’s failure to deposit their provident fund amounts since 2020 despite deducting the amount from their salaries.

This is not the first time that a company has failed to deposit the EPF contribution of their employees in the EPF account. Previously too, it has been reported that the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has raised a demand of Rs 1,181 crore on Sahara India for unpaid pension and provident fund dues.

To ensure that employers deposit the employees’ EPF dues are deposited on time, the government amended the income tax law in Budget 2021. As per the amended income tax law, employers will not be able to claim the deduction (employers can claim tax deduction on the EPF contribution deposited as an expense) if they do not deposit EPF dues on time.

By when should employers deposit the money into an employees’ EPF account?

Rishi Agrawal, Founder & CEO, TeamLease RegTech says “An employer is required to deposit the EPF contribution within 15 days of the month ending for which salary has been paid. For instance, for the month of July 2022, the employer is required to deposit both employer and employee EPF contribution by August 15, 2022 to an employee’s EPF account.”

How can an employee check if an employer has deposited the EPF contribution into his account on time?

Agrawal says, “Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) provides its account holders with an online facility to check both their and their employers’ contributions towards their EPF. However, employees whose accounts are with the trust should check with their employer about the passbook to check the monthly deposits.”

Ways to check EPF balance and download passbook

An EPF member can check and download the EPF passbook either via the EPFO portal or Umang app.

To access the EPF passbook, an EPF member is required to register himself or herself on the Member e-Sewa portal. To register on the portal one would details such as Universal Account Number (UAN), PAN and Aadhaar number. Once the account has been registered, the passbook can be accessed on the following link: https://passbook.epfindia.gov.in/MemberPassBook/Login.

To access the passbook through Umang app, an EPF member is required to download the same on their mobile phone, register themselves using their mobile number. Once the registration process is done, the passbook can be accessed simply by logging in using your UAN and one-time password (OTP) received on your registered mobile number.

Employees can also check their EPF balance through SMS and missed call facilities provided by the EPF as well. The SMS should be sent using the employee’s registered mobile number in the following format “EPFOHO UAN” to 7738299899. The number for the missed call facility is 011-22901406.
